| Title: | The seed of hope |
| Reference: | Mark 1:1-15 |
| Notes: | One of the most remarkable things about the Gospels is that they are anonymous. While we find that people today want to claim authorship of the work they created because of glory or worth. Mark is making sure that it is Jesus who should be getting the glory. So, how do we know it’s Mark? By looking at history. There was a document called the ‘Interpretation of the Lord’s Oracles’ which was written by Papias, Bishop of Hierapolis between 110 and 130 AD. He said “Mark having become the interpreter of Peter wrote down accurately whatever he remembered of the things said and done by the Lord, but not however in order.” Mark’s gospel – snappy and to the point. John is there to prepare the way Jesus and people are drawn to him. Because his life was a protest and because he lived his message. A confusing sign – Why would Jesus require to be baptised? - Moment of decision; moment of identification; moment of approval; moment of equipment A confusing development – Tempting in the desert. “Spirit sent him out into the desert.” We call this being tempted. Perhaps we should maybe being tested. Now being tested is no bad thing. We all require to be put to the test so see if we are up for the job. The seed of hope – John has been imprisoned; Perhaps people feel they should be despondent. But Jesus arrives in Galilee with the three great dominant words of the Christian Faith. ‘The Good News’ “The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news.” In a world of lies there is the seed of truth In the world of discontentment there is the seed of peace The word repent – Greek ‘metanoia’ a change of mind Sorry for the consequences, and sorry for the sin. – There is a difference In a world of depression there is the seed of hope |
